Stroke is the 4th leading cause of death in the United States. Every 3 minutes and 14 seconds, someone loses their life as a result of a stroke. Stroke is also the leading cause of long-term disability, and nearly 800,000 people suffer a stroke each year. It can happen to anyone, at any age.

Despite these staggering numbers, many strokes can be prevented. Recognizing the warning signs and quick access to treatment can help save lives. While we have learned a lot about how to identify, treat and prevent stroke, more must be done to improve outcomes for patients and families.

The Stroke Act recently introduced in the United States Senate, would improve stroke care from prevention through recovery. The bill would support research to better understand and treat stroke, help healthcare providers track and improve patient outcomes, expand access to rehabilitation and recovery services and increase public education about stroke risk factors and warning signs. Together, these efforts would help more people get the right care at the right time and improve outcomes for stroke patients across the country.

Your Senators can make a huge difference in helping identify, treat and prevent stroke by supporting this important legislation. With the right information, care and support, up to 80% of strokes may be preventable. Ask your Senators to be a leader in the fight against stroke by cosponsoring the Stroke Act today.
