Smart Heart Act

Legislative Status: The bill was filed last year and has passed its first reading in the Senate. It is now awaiting a vote in the Senate Committee on Appropriations/Base Budget.

Double Up Food Bucks

Meanwhile, another issue in the news focuses on strengthening North Carolina’s food systems. This includes support for Double Up Food Bucks.

Through this program, families receive a dollar-for-dollar SNAP match when they buy fresh fruits and vegetables. The match can be used at participating grocery stores and farmers markets. This program helps families buy healthy food while supporting local farmers and food systems statewide.
