South Carolina Heart at the Capitol: Turning Passion into Policy for Healthier Communities

February, 4 2026

On January 28th, 2026, the American Heart Association united its passionate Heart Powered advocates at the capitol in Columbia for the South Carolina Heart at the Capitol lobby day, a day dedicated to raising voices for healthier lives and stronger communities. Over thirty advocates came together to champion the Smart Heart Act, which would help schools be prepared to save lives in a cardiac emergency, and advocate for tax parity across tobacco and vape products.

Throughout the day, advocates met with state lawmakers. The conversations were overwhelmingly positive and reflected strong engagement around the Smart Heart Act. Advocates also met with the Senate President, who expressed strong support due in part to his longstanding relationship with our spokesperson and State Advocacy Committee member Lekesha Benson.

The momentum continued beyond those conversations. Following advocates’ visits, Education Committee staff shared that the Smart Heart Act would be receiving a hearing soon–an encouraging development that reflects the growing attention around this issue.

Another highlight of the day came during the morning meeting and press conference, where Miss America’s Teen, Tess Ferm, and Miss South Carolina, Sarah Kay Wrenn, joined advocates to lend their voices in support of heart‑healthy policies. Miss South Carolina also kicked off the morning session and participated in the hands‑only CPR demonstration, underscoring how simple steps can save lives. Their presence reinforced an important message: when leaders from across the community stand with us, our call for healthier, safer schools becomes even stronger.

The South Carolina Heart at the Capitol lobby day proved what’s possible when we unite to change the future of health: policies that protect hearts, prevent disease, and build healthier communities for generations to come.
