Progress in Indiana: Fewer cigarettes sold, healthier Hoosiers

May 22, 2026

Last year, the Indiana legislature passed a $2 per pack tax increase on cigarettes, as well as an equivalent increase on other tobacco products. A recently released report reveals that cigarette pack sales have dropped by 13.8% and e-cigarette sales by an estimated 8.3% since the tax went into effect.

The tax increase generated an estimated $170.4 million in added tobacco tax revenue between July and December of 2025. Additionally, the report shows no evidence of increased sales in border states due to higher costs in Indiana.

Tobacco use remains one of the leading causes of preventable death and disease. Thanks to your advocacy, Hoosiers are smoking less and creating a healthier future for themselves.
