Planning ahead for the 2027 Nevada Legislative Session

July 29, 2026

We made it through the primary, which gave us slightly better idea into who we will be working with in the 2027 legislative session, however there are still many unknowns including whether the Governor will retain his position, or if Nevada will have a new Governor, the current Attorney General. The Governor’s race is close, and could influence other important races including who will be in leadership positions in the Legislature in 2027.

In the meantime, we are working to determine key alliances, and build vital partners for our 2027 legislative priorities.

Our priorities as of right now include:

Cardiac Emergency Response Plans:

We are working on key policy issues, such as completing our efforts on Cardiac Emergency Response Plans with the addition of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) into current statute, and to ensure the changes passed in the 2025 Legislative Session cover all schools and students in Nevada.

Tobacco Control:

We are part of the Nevada Tobacco Control and Smoke-free Coalition that presented at the legislative interim revenue committee early in July, hoping to find support for increasing all tobacco taxes in the 2027 session. This will help with current budget challenges by increasing revenue, but can also help reduce youth smoking, vaping, and nicotine use.

Nutrition Security:

We’ve been talking to partners about nutrition and food security efforts, and how the recent changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program might provide opportunities to talk about our healthy school meals for all efforts, and other efforts around nutrition. Healthy School Meals for All legislation was vetoed by the current Governor several years ago, the close race for that seat, and the pressure that has been seen in communities across the state when it comes to healthy eating may provide a chance to bring stakeholders together to secure policy success on this issue and help ensure Nevada school children have access to school meals at no cost.

We’ll be working the remainder of the summer and into the fall to build legislative champions and advocates relations to help drive us to success during the legislative session in 2027. If any of these issues interest you please reach out to our Grassroots Manager Grace – [email protected]
