Paid Family and Medical Leave becomes law in Virginia!
May 11, 2026
Thanks to sustained advocacy efforts, Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) was signed into law in Virginia
This long‑awaited policy will help ensure that private sector employees no longer have to choose between their health, their loved ones, and a paycheck.
PFML will allow Virginians to take paid time away from work to:
- Care for a new child
- Support a seriously ill family member
- Address their own serious health condition
This milestone reflects years of effort by advocates like you who raised your voices, shared personal stories, and engaged with lawmakers to advance policies that protect health and hope for everyone, everywhere. Paid leave is linked to improved maternal health outcomes, better recovery from illness, and reduced stress for families — all priorities the American Heart Association champions.
