Oregon Legislative Session: Healthy Meals & Safer Schools

The Oregon legislative session is just around the corner with the first deadline – presession filing deadline – having come and gone. But we’re hitting the ground running with two priorities: School Meals for All and Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERP).

In the waning days of the November interim days, we secured legislator champions for both bills which in a short session where each legislator only gets two bills in a win in and of itself. We are now shifting our focus to getting additional co-sponsors to show strong bi-partisan and bi-cameral support when session starts in early February.

Volunteer Highlight: CERPs save lives. Just ask Liz at McKenzie River Community School in Vida, Oregon. When a teacher collapsed from cardiac arrest outside her office, thanks to Liz’s preparation, CPR began immediately, and an AED was applied within 90 seconds. The teacher survived and is back in the classroom today. In a rural school 45 minutes from a hospital, preparedness made all the difference. This month, Liz shared her story in an in district meeting and helped secure an essential new co-sponsor for our bill!

With momentum building, we’re ready to make sure Oregon schools are places where every student is nourished—and every campus is prepared when seconds matter.
