No Keiki Should Go Hungry

October 7, 2026

Every keiki deserves a healthy start in life, and that means having enough nutritious food to eat. The reality is too many kids in Hawai’i aren’t getting enough healthy food and are going hungry. When kids are hungry, it makes it difficult for them to learn and thrive.

One of our top issues for the upcoming legislative session is Universal Free School Meals. We want to ensure all students in Hawai’i K-12 schools have access to free breakfast and lunch. This is one of the best ways to address childhood hunger and help kids be fed for success. Part of ensuring our keiki get a quality education is ensuring they have the nourishment they need to learn.

In 2025, Hawai’i expanded eligibility for students who qualify for free school meals. In 2027 we will be working with partners to close the gap and pass legislation that will cover all school students.

Universal free school meals also helps eliminate the stigma associated with free and reduced-price meals because all students are treated equally.

With your help we can ensure Hawai’i joins the 10 other states in adopting a Healthy School Meals for All policy. This won’t be easy, but together we can make sure Hawai’i invests in our keiki and their future.
