Indiana Heart at the Capitol: Turning Passion into Policy for Healthier Communities

Throughout the day, advocates met with 121 lawmakers and legislative staff to share why heart health matters and how smart policies can make a real difference. These conversations focused on AEDs and Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERPs) in schools, sparking meaningful dialogue about the role policy plays in creating environments where everyone has the opportunity to live longer, healthier lives.

Ken Edmonds spoke about why the NFL believes in the importance of this legislation during one-on-one meetings with the Speaker of the House, the Senate President Pro Tempore, and the House Education Chairman. Louis Delaby, SAC member and President of the Purdue University Heart Club, shared the story of losing his father at the age of 49. Zahra Dhoondia, SAC member and President of the soon-to-be-formed Valparaiso University Heart Club, shared her own experience living with a heart condition and the sense of security she feels in places where AEDs are available and emergency action plans are in place.

Bob Cesnik and Tara Peterman, both retired IFD firefighters, shared their experiences as first responders to individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest and the difference immediate bystander CPR and AED use can make. They spoke about how the loss of children who did not receive CPR or access to an AED stays with responders for years. These stories reminded us that behind every policy is a person, and that advocacy is about turning personal experiences into progress for all.

The impact did not stop at the meetings. Everyone who responded to our action alert made an impact as well. Thanks to these efforts, Amendment #6 restoring the AED/CERP legislation to HB 1004 was passed by unanimous consent the following morning, and the bill passed committee 10–1. While there is still concern about potential amendments that could weaken the language as the bill moves to the Senate, we will remain vigilant as this moves through the legislative process.

These results show the incredible power of people coming together to advocate for change. Heart at the Capitol proved what’s possible when we unite to change the future of health: policies that protect hearts, prevent disease, and build healthier communities for generations to come.
