Good News for Keiki in Hawai’i

We have good news to share. Legislation to help address childhood hunger in our state was recently signed by Governor Green and will go into effect this fall!

The bill, SB 1300, expands access to free school meals for students, helping keep our keiki fed for success.

This bill will:

  • Provide students who qualify for reduced-price lunch with school meals for free beginning this fall.
  • Expand eligibility for free school meals to more students beginning in the 2026-2027 school year.
  • Reimburse schools to provide free school meals.
  • Reduce stigma around school meal programs.

Healthy, nutritious meals are essential for a successful school day. When students have access to breakfast and lunch, their health, mood, and academic performance significantly improve. This issue was a high priority for us in the 2025 legislative session and we are so excited to see it passed and signed into law.
