From Arkansas to D.C.: Ciara Callicott Champions Child Nutrition on Capitol Hill

In late April, the halls of Capitol Hill were buzzing with purpose as passionate advocates from across the nation gathered in Washington, D.C. for a powerful Hill Day organized by the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA). Among them was Arkansas native and American Heart Association advocate, Ciara Callicott, who joined the diverse coalition to speak out in support of strong child nutrition policies. Callicott is a longtime child nutrition advocate who serves as the Founder and CEO of Unite to Fight Poverty, a non-profit organization.

This energized group represented a wide spectrum of voices from parents of school-aged children and school staff to healthcare professionals, nutritionists, and individuals who grew up facing food insecurity. Some were seasoned veterans of Capitol Hill, while others were stepping into congressional offices for the very first time. Together, they brought stories, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring every child in America has access to nutritious meals.

Over the course of the day, the group met with more than 30 congressional offices, engaging in meaningful conversations with lawmakers and their staff. For Callicott, the experience was deeply personal and profoundly moving. As she reflected on the day, she shared:

“I benefited from child nutrition programs like free breakfast and lunch growing up and know from personal experience that food is the most important school supply a kid can have. It was really empowering to be able to share my story with the people who make decisions that impact our everyday lives as Americans, and I hope that our advocacy encouraged our nation’s leaders to protect kids’ access to these vital programs.”

Her words echoed the sentiment felt by many – when advocates come together to share their truths, real change becomes possible. Want to add your voice and become an advocate with the American Heart Association today? Text HEART to 46839 or CLICK HERE.
