New Jersey lawmakers to create a sustainable, statewide funding for CERPs
February, 26 2026
Time matters when a cardiac emergency occurs. It can mean the difference between life and death. Since the state established a requirement for cardiac emergency response plans (CERPs), implementation has been left to individual school districts. While the intent was strong, the result remains inconsistent at best, and inequitable protection for our students.
Many school districts simply do not have the resources needed to fully implement CERPs. Without reliable, dedicated state funding, critical components of cardiac emergency preparedness are left vulnerable. State funding would ensure that all schools regardless of zip code or budget can:
- Purchase and maintain Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to meet the varied needs of school campuses.
- Provide CPR/AED training for designated staff so responders are always prepared.
- Establish and regularly drill Cardiac Emergency Response Teams to ensure rapid, coordinated action.
- Keep response plans updated as best practices and safety standards evolve.
No child’s safety should depend on the financial capacity of their school district.
That’s why we are calling on New Jersey lawmakers to create a sustainable, statewide funding mechanism for CERPs and we will need your voice this session. Please be on the lookout for upcoming emails to help move this issue forward in Trenton!
With heart,
