Cardiac Emergency Response Plan/AED Act Signed Into Law
January 9, 2025
This summer, AHA volunteers and coalition partners stood beside Governor Andy Beshear as he ceremonially signed into law the Cardiac Emergency Response Plan/AED Act. This law requires public schools across the state to implement these plans and maintain AEDs on campus in order to prepare for cardiac events. Heart disease is Kentucky’s #1 killer, so ensuring that more community members are equipped to save lives in times of crisis is key.
Student athlete Matthew Mangine had a sudden cardiac arrest during soccer conditioning. EMTs and hospital staff weren’t able to save him. Now his parents are on a mission to save other young athletes from sudden cardiac arrest, raising awareness about AEDs and what to do in a cardiac emergency. Please watch the video below to learn more about Matthew’s story.
