California Session Wraps with Mixed Results
At the American Heart Association, we pride ourselves in being a relentless force for changing the future of health for everyone everywhere. It’s with great excitement that we share Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 573 into law, a victory in protecting children from tobacco products in California.
AB 573 helps enforce public health laws by giving agencies the funding they need to check that rules and safety measures are being followed. This means better protection and healthier lives for kids in California. Thanks to your support, the state can now do more checks to make sure tobacco retailers follow the law.
While we celebrate this progress, we also want to acknowledge the disappointment surrounding the veto of SB 764, which would have improved nutrition standards for kids’ meals in large chain restaurants. We issued a statement in response, reaffirming our commitment to healthier food environments for children.
