Building Healthier Communities From the Ground Up

June 2, 2026

Members of Hard Hats with Heart were invited to meet to discuss the powerful role the construction industry plays in advancing heart health and community well-being. The conversation highlighted that advocacy is not just about policy, it is about shaping the environments where people live, learn, and thrive.

The discussion emphasized how industry expertise can directly support healthier futures for children and families. Building school cafeterias that are large enough to accommodate all students during appropriate lunch periods, along with kitchens capable of preparing fresher meals, helps ensure students have access to nutritious food every day—an essential foundation for both learning and long-term health.

Participants also explored how construction professionals can champion active living through thoughtful community design. Indiana communities are experiencing a sharp increase in new housing development, often along county roads without shoulders that were not designed for current traffic levels. Connecting subdivisions to each other and to parks, trails, and schools creates safe routes for children and families to walk, roll, or ride. These connections make it easier for neighbors to meet, play, and stay active without relying on a car, strengthening both heart health and community bonds.

Because the meeting took place during CPR/AED Week, attendees practiced Hands-Only CPR, reinforcing a simple truth: the power to save a life is in everyone’s hands. Emergencies happen without warning, and building confidence through practice ensures more people are prepared to step in when it matters most.

Whether learning CPR for the first time or refreshing existing skills, this quick video is a great place to start.

From designing healthier neighborhoods to learning lifesaving skills, Hard Hats with Heart demonstrates how advocacy and action go hand in hand. Together, communities can be built to support safety, connection, and heart health at every level.
