Building a Nation of Lifesavers in Arizona
June 2, 2026
June 1–7 is National CPR and AED Awareness Week. It’s an important opportunity to remind everyone how vital it is to act quickly during a cardiac emergency. We are urging everyone to learn Hands-Only CPR.
Why it Matters
Each year, more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States, and 90% are fatal. Immediate CPR and AED use can double or triple a person’s chance of survival. Yet too many people do not receive help before emergency responders arrive.
This week, the American Heart Association is encouraging Arizonans to join the Nation of Lifesavers and help make CPR and AED awareness a permanent part of our communities.
What is Happening in Arizona
Arizona has made strong progress in protecting student athletes by advancing Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERPs) in school athletics—ensuring that coaches, staff, and schools are prepared to respond quickly during practices and games as well as funding grants across the state for schools to purchase AEDs.
Building on this success, we are working to expand CERP policies in schools so that comprehensive emergency response plans are in place across entire campuses, protecting all students, staff, and visitors.
Through these efforts, Arizona is continuing to strengthen its commitment to building a Nation of Lifesavers.
