Building a Nation of Lifesavers in Alaska
June 2, 2026
June 1–7 is National CPR and AED Awareness Week. It’s the perfect time to remind everyone how critical it is to know how to save a life during a cardiac emergency—especially in communities where emergency response times can be longer. We are urging everyone to learn Hands-Only CPR.
Why it Matters
More than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur every year in the United States, and 90% will be fatal. Immediate CPR and AED use can double or even triple someone’s chance of survival. Yet fewer than half of those in need receive CPR from bystanders before help arrives.
This CPR and AED Awareness Week, the American Heart Association is calling on everyone to join the Nation of Lifesavers and make CPR and AED training accessible in every corner of the state.
What is Happening in Alaska
Alaska is on the brink of a major step forward, with CPR in Schools legislation awaiting the Governor’s signature—bringing the state closer to ensuring that students graduate with lifesaving skills.
At the same time, we are working to advance Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERPs) so that schools are equipped with clear, coordinated plans to respond when cardiac emergencies occur.
These efforts are especially critical in Alaska, where bystander response can be the difference between life and death in rural and remote communities. Together, they are helping build a stronger Nation of Lifesavers across the state.
