Bold Steps for a Healthier Hoosier State
Recently, our Government Relations Director, Christina Cesnik, was asked to serve on a committee for the Indiana Obesity and Diet-Related Chronic Disease Plan. Indiana ranks among the most obese states in the nation. This alarming statistic isn’t just about weight—it’s a gateway to chronic conditions, like heart disease, that burden families, communities, and our healthcare system.
Governor Braun has tasked the Indiana Department of Health committee to review the following issues and assess their efficacy:
- Nutrition Reform in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families: Rethinking how food assistance programs support healthy choices.
- Food Transparency: Improving labeling and regulating food dyes to empower consumers.
- School Nutrition & Physical Activity: Improving what kids eat and how they move during the school day.
- Wellness Education: Promoting lifelong habits through community and school-based education.
- Local Food Access: Expanding Indiana-grown food availability to support both health and local economies.
- Program Evaluation: Reviewing existing programs for effectiveness and return on investment.
We are collaborating with partners, including the Indiana Hospital Association, Purdue Extension, the Fairbanks School of Public Health, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE), and Medicaid & Medicare, to gather and analyze data.
An Advisory Council is being formed to help steer this vital work, and the American Heart Association’s Heart Powered advocates have an opportunity to be a part of this influential group. As advocates, your knowledge of cardiovascular health and ability to engage in your community are powerful qualities that the IDOH needs.
Right now, Indiana is at a pivotal moment. With bold leadership, collaboration across sectors, and a clear strategic vision, we have a real chance to turn things around and create a healthier future for all Hoosiers.
Let’s keep the energy going. If you have questions, ideas, feedback—or if you’re interested in joining the Advisory Council—please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Indiana GRD Christina Cesnik at [email protected].
