Arizona Advocacy in Action: Legislative Year in Review

Legislative session was a landmark period for the American Heart Association in Arizona, marked by bold legislative successes, strategic advocacy, and a continued commitment to health for everyone, everywhere. From expanding access to nutritious food to ensuring life-saving equipment is available at youth sporting events, we remained a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives.

On January 16, we kicked off the legislative session with our annual Advocacy Day at the Capitol, bringing together passionate volunteers, survivors, and health advocates. Held at Wesley Bolin Plaza, the event featured CPR demonstrations, meetings with lawmakers, and powerful storytelling that set the tone for a year of impactful policy work.

Throughout the session, we championed several key issues—and saw them through to success:

  • Passed a groundbreaking law requiring automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at all high school athletic events and venues. This life-saving measure was championed by survivors, physicians, and advocates who understand the critical importance of immediate cardiac response.
  • Secured $2 million to make fresh fruits and vegetables more affordable for families using SNAP benefits
  • Allocated $3.8 million to fund reduced-price school meals, ensuring that no child goes hungry due to financial barriers and supporting healthier school environments.
  • Raised the minimum tobacco sales age from 18 to 21, aligning Arizona law with federal law and taking a critical step in preventing youth tobacco addiction.
  • Defeated bills backed by the tobacco industry.
  • Blocked multiple bills that threatened to restrict access to Medicaid, protecting vital healthcare coverage for thousands of Arizonans.

These victories reflect the power of collaboration, community, and a shared vision for a healthier Arizona.

As we look ahead to the next legislative session, our work is far from over. One of our key areas of focus will be advancing comprehensive cardiac emergency response plans in schools—a critical step in ensuring that every student, educator, and visitor is protected in the event of a cardiac emergency. While we are still in the process of finalizing our legislative agenda for the upcoming year, our commitment to building healthier, safer communities across Arizona remains stronger than ever. With continued collaboration and advocacy, we’re ready to take on the challenges ahead.
