Advocates, Volunteers, and Lawmakers Unite at Lenexa Event for Healthier Kansas
May 11, 2026
On Tuesday, May 5th, health advocates and community volunteers gathered in Lenexa, Kansas, to hear directly from a bipartisan group of lawmakers who helped pass a new policy expanding access to free school meals in qualifying schools. This important step forward will make it easier for students across Kansas to receive the nutrition they need to learn, grow, and thrive by reducing administrative barriers for families and schools. More than 50 attendees joined the event, co-hosted by Kansas Appleseed, for an evening of connection, shared learning, and meaningful conversation about improving health across the state. Volunteers, advocates, and community partners came together not just to celebrate progress but to build momentum for continued action.
Panelists included Representative Stiens, Representative Meyer, and Senator Thomas, who each spoke to the power of bipartisan collaboration in advancing policies that put people first. They emphasized that focusing on solutions, rather than political differences, was key to passing the school meals bill and ensuring more Kansas students have access to consistent, healthy food.

The conversation also highlighted the broader challenges many Kansans face in accessing care. Lawmakers and attendees discussed Kansas’s continued status as one of only 10 states that have not expanded Medicaid, and other opportunities to close coverage gaps.
For volunteers and advocates, the message was clear: progress is possible when communities stay engaged and continue pushing for change. Expanding access to school meals is one important win, but there is more work ahead.
The American Heart Association remains committed to advancing bipartisan solutions, including Medicaid expansion and policies that increase access to preventive, emergency, and follow-up care. With continued advocacy and volunteer leadership, we can help ensure all Kansans have the opportunity to live, longer healthier lives.
