Advocates in Action: Testimonies at the Ohio Statehouse
While the battle over the operating budget continues in Ohio, Heart Powered advocates are making their voices heard in the Statehouse. On Wednesday, May 14th, four individuals with the American Heart Association testified about why the legislature should prioritize funding healthy programs in Ohio.
Amber Higbie emphasized the importance of the previous funding allocated to equip 65,000 graduating seniors in Ohio with the lifesaving skills of CPR and AED training. Higbie requested that the committee support continual funding for this vital training, allowing another 500 schools to train their students in CPR and AED so that they are emboldened to respond to a sudden cardiac arrest emergency.
The Senate Health Committee heard testimony from Leah Behler of the Clark County Combined Health District. Leah spoke about the need to adequately fund the Tobacco Use Prevention Fund as tobacco-use is the leading contributor to heart disease, stroke and cancer. Additionally, Leah urged the Committee to reinsert the Governor’s proposed vapor retailer licensing program to decrease the likelihood of vapes being sold to underaged youth.
In the Senate Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee, Dr. Justin Benoit and Tim Lewis, advocated funding Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES). By funding CARES, the Ohio legislature would help create a greater understanding of where cardiac arrests are occurring, and patient outcomes. With this knowledge, it would be possible to raise the survival rate for cardiac arrest across the state.
By using their voice, these advocates made sure their lawmakers know that they should prioritize the health of Ohioans and fund these crucial programs. You can do the same by taking action today and messaging your lawmaker here: https://midwestregion.quorum.us/campaign/117895/
