A Great Day at the Hawaii State Capitol Building
March, 11 2026
On February 25th, 2026, the American Heart Association brought together a small but mighty group of passionate Heart Powered advocates to the Hawaii State Capitol to champion policies focused on preventing heart disease, improving health, and saving lives.
Advocates held 14 meetings with legislators and their staff to discuss key priorities. Conversations with lawmakers were focused on Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) screenings and improving school food access and quality, highlighting how smart policies can help create healthier communities.
One of the most memorable meetings was with Representative Trish La Chica, Assistant Majority Floor Leader and the introducer of HB 1779, universal free school meals for all legislation. She shared her perspective on the bill’s path forward and discussed how advocates could help move it toward a hearing in the House Finance Committee.
She also recognized American Heart Association volunteers and staff on the House floor during the session, ensuring their advocacy was acknowledged in the official journal.
Thanks to these efforts, we gathered valuable strategic insight for the heart assessment bill as we prepare for next year’s legislative session. Advocates also gained a clearer understanding of what it takes to move legislation forward.
One of the most inspiring moments of the day came when our board member, Dr. Shu, shared a personal story highlighting the importance of heart assessments for student athletes. He lost his nephew to sudden cardiac arrest at just 23 years old. His nephew was a four-time water polo champion and appeared completely healthy. After his passing, the family discovered a hereditary heart defect that runs in their family. His story reminded everyone that behind every policy is a person.
Two weeks after Heart at the Capitol the school meals for all bill passed out of House and will start its path through the Senate.
Overall, Hawaii Heart at the Capitol 2026, was a resounding success. The day brought together people with shared passion and allowed them to make their voices heard.
