2025 Legislative Session Update
As the legislative session approaches its May 1 end date, we’ve been actively engaging with legislators on several key priorities. This busy session has seen significant strides in educating lawmakers on important issues, including:
- Restricting the sale of flavored tobacco products
- Restoring local communities’ power to regulate tobacco laws
- Implementing paid family medical leave
- Teaching students CPR before graduation
- Ensuring cardiac emergency response plans are in place at all schools
Additionally, we’re working tirelessly to expand the school meals program to reach more students. Healthy, nutritious meals are crucial for a successful school day. When students have access to breakfast and lunch, their health, mood, and academic performance improve significantly. Unfortunately, many children in Hawaiʻi still experience hunger throughout the day.
Senate Bill 1300 aims to expand eligibility for free school meals, ensuring more students can eat without skipping meals. This expansion is a vital step toward ending hunger and food insecurity in Hawaiʻi. The bill is currently under consideration by the conference committees, so stay tuned for opportunities to engage your representatives on this important issue.
