Access to nutritious food and high-quality, affordable medical care are critical in the prevention, treatment and management of chronic diseases. Tens of millions of people, including parents, children, working people, veterans, people with disabilities and chronic medical conditions and seniors, access these two pillars of heart and brain health through Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Congress is rushing to make drastic cuts to both programs, which could put millions of people at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act advanced in the House of Representatives by a single vote now only needs to pass the Senate for these drastic cuts to SNAP and Medicaid to become law—and for millions of people to lose these benefits.
