Watching the Nevada primary election and how it might impact our work
April 28, 2026
With a number of elected officials announcing their retirement and people moving from Legislative to Executive positions the Nevada primary election is turning out to be quite heated. We are also keeping a close eye on the Governor’s race as we examine our policy agenda and where we focus our efforts in 2027.
In the meantime, our work is focused on three areas:
- Tobacco control: As we move forward with our partners in tobacco control, we have been able to present to interim committees on the need for an increase in tobacco taxes, and how that could improve health across the state. We are looking for opportunities to share this information with candidates and how tax revenue from this can be used to assist others to quit and help drive healthier communities.
- Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERPs): We are working with our CERP partners and the Nevada Education Department to ensure cardiac emergencies are included in model language for emergency action plans in all schools across the state. After the primary elections we will work to find a sponsor that can help us include language that requires AED access and education with emergency plans as well.
- Local T-CPR: We are continuing to work with Clark County to review and secure telecommunicator CPR (T-CPR) as a qualification for emergency communications officers and are finding ways to adopt that model at the state level as well.
We’re looking forward to a very interesting primary election and seeing how that might impact and influence our policy efforts as we move forward.
