New England’s Heart Month: Advocates in Action Across the Region

February, 27 2026

Heart Month in New England kicked off on Groundhog Day with an energetic Advocacy Forecast in Maine, where Heart Powered Advocates gathered to discuss heart- and brain healthy legislation moving through Augusta. Whitney provided an insider’s look at the policy landscape, and advocates engaged in thoughtful conversation about how they can support this year’s priorities.

In Rhode Island, lawmakers and staff put lifesaving skills into practice during a hands-only CPR Challenge on February 3. More than 50 legislators and State House staff participated in the event, held in collaboration with Senate Majority Whip David Tikoian (D 22) and House Deputy Majority Leader Thomas Noret (D 25), both former first responders. This hands on experience helped highlight the critical importance of strengthening cardiac arrest preparedness in schools.

Advocates in Vermont showed up in force on National Wear Red Day, gathering at the State House to urge lawmakers to pass S.198 and strengthen retail laws that help keep nicotine and vaping products out of young people’s hands. A huge thank you to everyone who came out to speak up for Vermont’s youth.

Throughout the month, Heart Powered advocacy was welcomed at Go Red for Women events across the region. On February 11, Maine hosted its first-ever Go Red STEM event, where more than 40 young women explored future careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. On February 12, advocates in both Rhode Island and New Hampshire shared how policy impacts heart health, and many attendees signed up to join Heart Powered.

On February 23, the Connecticut Board held an advocacy training focused on Cardiac Emergency Response Plans in schools, the importance of school meals for all students, and strategies for effective conversations with lawmakers.

New Hampshire rounded out the month with a February 26 virtual Lunch & Learn, where advocates heard an insider legislative update from Nancy on heart- and brain healthy proposals in Concord. Attendees asked excellent questions and explored how they can take action in the weeks ahead.

Finally, the Massachusetts Women’s Caucus closed the month with a powerful show of support, gathering lawmakers on the State House staircase for a Go Red for Women photo in recognition of Heart Month and women’s heart health.

Across New England, advocates raised their voices, educated lawmakers, and inspired communities. All united by a commitment to building a future free of heart disease and stroke. From CPR demonstrations to policy trainings to powerful moments of visibility, Heart Powered Advocates made an unmistakable impact this February.

Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, shared their stories, or simply showed up wearing red. Your passion fuels our progress and the momentum we built this month will carry us forward.

Here’s to continuing the fight for healthier hearts and stronger communities across New England.
