Virginia Heart at the Capitol: Turning Passion into Policy for Healthier Communities
February, 5 2026
On January 22, 2026, the American Heart Association brought together its passionate Heart Powered advocates at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond for Heart at the Capitol Day. This was a day dedicated to raising voices for healthier lives and stronger communities. Seventy-four advocates, along with partners from the VA HSMFA Coalition and the School Nutrition Association of Virginia, came together to champion policies that prevent disease, improve health, and save lives.
Throughout the day, advocates met with 35 lawmakers and legislative staff members, including leadership in both chambers and influential members of the Appropriations Committees. Advocates also engaged with supportive legislators, encouraging them to help build momentum among their colleagues in support of School Breakfast for All. Together, these conversations highlighted why heart health matters and how smart policies can make a real difference. Discussions focused on improving school food access and quality, sparking meaningful dialogue about the role policy plays in creating environments where everyone has the opportunity to live longer, healthier lives.
The impact didn’t stop at the meetings. Thanks to these efforts, our volunteers received many affirmations of support for the legislation. The Senate version of the school breakfast for all bill passed the full Senate Education and Health Committee unanimously that morning.
One of the most inspiring moments of the day came through our partnership with the School Nutrition Association of Virginia. This partnership allowed local school nutrition directors to meet directly with their representatives and share firsthand, “boots on the ground” perspectives on why the School Breakfast for All bills should be passed. Additionally, a videography team captured interviews with volunteers about their lived experiences and with legislators on the importance of the legislation. These stories served as a powerful reminder that behind every policy is a person, and that advocacy turns personal experiences into meaningful progress for all.
Virginia Heart at the Capitol proved what’s possible when we unite to change the future of health: policies that protect hearts, prevent disease, and build healthier communities for generations to come.
