Get Ready: Kentucky’s Legislative Session is Coming Up!

December, 5 2025

Kentucky’s legislative session is approaching fast, set to begin January 6th in Frankfort and expected to last until mid-April. 2026 is a “budget year,” meaning legislators will be required to pass a two-year budget to fund various state and local programs.

At the American Heart Association, we will focus on a handful of appropriations. Let’s get to know a few of them:

Tobacco Prevention and Control – We’re advocating for funding the Kentucky Tobacco Prevention and Control Program to strengthen youth prevention, maintain the state’s tobacco quitline, and support local health department capacity. Comprehensive tobacco prevention and cessation programs are a proven method to keep kids from starting to smoke and help adults quit. Tobacco use costs Kentucky $2.23 billion annually in healthcare costs. Investing in the Kentucky Tobacco Prevention and Control Program can reduce those costs and make Kentuckians healthier.

CPR in Schools – Kentucky law requires public schools to teach students CPR and AED awareness before high school graduation, and we’re seeking funding to help them succeed in this life-saving effort. Teaching students CPR and AED awareness can save thousands of lives by filling Kentucky communities with lifesavers – those trained to give the immediate help needed to someone experiencing cardiac arrest until EMS arrives. Public funding is necessary, so all schools have the resources to provide CPR training year after year, building a Nation of Lifesavers.
