Walk With Us: Heart Walks & Summer Advocacy Wins
We took a short break during July and August, and now we’re back with a couple of updates!
Here’s what we’ve been working on this summer:
- Updating Spokane’s Complete Street Ordinance
Spokane updated their Complete Streets Ordinance for the first time this year since 2011. We traveled to Spokane to testify that Spokane should strengthen their Complete Streets Ordinance. Following our testimony, Council Member Kitty Klitzke, the sponsor of the policy update, accepted several of our recommendations and amended the bill accordingly. The next phase of this work will focus on incorporating equity into the ordinance which the city has chosen to address through a separate process.
- Cardiac Emergency Response Plan Campaign (CERPs)
We’re working to implement CERP Policies in all public schools and plan to launch Washington’s first Smart Hearts Coalition this fall.
- Ending the sale of flavored tobacco products
This session revealed the gap in legislators’ understanding of the dangers of tobacco and nicotine. We are working with coalition partners to educate lawmakers and advocate for stronger prevention policies, including the end of the sale of flavored tobacco products.
Additionally, we would like to invite you to join us in Spokane, Tacoma, and Seattle for the Heart & Stroke Walk! The Heart & Stroke Walk is a fun, family-friendly event that brings our community together to get active, raise life-saving funds, and support the mission of the American Heart Association. Whether you’re a seasoned walker or just looking for a great day out, join us to celebrate heart health, honor survivors, and remember loved ones affected by heart disease and stroke. Lace up your sneakers for a day filled with music, activities, and camaraderie. Through fundraising and community engagement, the Heart & Stroke Walk aims to enhance CPR training accessibility, bolster bystander preparedness, increase funding for vital research, and ultimately, save lives.
